Wander among striking installations and local bush foods at Yagan Memorial Park - a place of reflection that commemorates the life, spirit and legacy of the great Noongar leader, Yagan (c.1795–1833). This unique site honours his life, death and enduring significance as a leader, warrior and resistance fighter. His repatriated head now rests here, and the spirit fire was lit so his spirit could join the ancestors.
A collaborative artwork by Peter Farmer, Sandra Hill and Jenny Dawson narrates Yagan’s story in a meandering silk-screened porcelain piece set into rammed-earth wall. Striking entrance sculptures represent male and female Scar Trees: the male marked with the Noongar shield, and the female with the Coolamon, a traditional food-gathering dish.
Bush tucker plants, including quandong and sandalwood, grow throughout the park. Benches overlooking Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) offer a quiet place for reflection.

Maali Bridge Park, located on the edge of the Swan River, is home to Spirit of Maali, a sculpture inspired by Midland Aboriginal artist Jeanette Garlett’s sketches of her childhood memories of watching black swans.
The artwork also draws on the stories of her parents and other Noongar people, who camped in the Swan Valley and worked seasonally, including grape picking.
Jeanette is a member of the Stolen Generations. She lived in the Swan Valley until the age of six, when she was taken from her family, and she was not reunited with her mother until she was 40.
