With a General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging (GCBP) from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) and five years of experience at Gage Roads Brewing Company, Charlie is the passionate head brewer at Mash Brewing. He started home brewing in the late 90s and quickly moved on to extract brewing for more ownership of the final product.
Charlie has spent a decade working in the Swan Valley, starting as a cellar hand at Houghtons from 2000 until 2006. He started grain brewing so he could fully experience beer design and brewing from scratch. As an amateur home brewer at a national level he picked up a best in class for an English bitter in 2005.
Charlie says Houghtons was always going to be a stepping stone into brewing and was invaluable in teaching him the cellaring trade, pump and line selection, tank sanitation, various types of filtration, oak work, white and red wine fermentation and stabilisation.
