Mario Murace’s roadside stall is typical of what you’ll find scattered throughout the Swan Valley: small growers continuing the European tradition of offering for sale whatever’s growing in their garden at any given time.
In Mario’s case it’s grapes, cut flowers and freshly-dug garlic, which are available from October until around Christmas. He also has a few oranges from time to time.
Regulars have been stopping off at Mario’s place since the 1970s, and an honesty box system operates. “When I’ve got produce to sell, I simply put out my sign,” he says.
