For a taste of the old days, a visit to Highway Wines is a must. Specialising in fortified wines – about 10 varieties, including ports, muscat, tokay and sherries.
Established in 1949 by Tony Bakranich, the winery is still much as it was in the old days, now selling its fortified range in 375 and 750ml bottles. Vintage port is the most popular drop in Highway's fortified range and all the grapes come from the 10.5 hectare vineyard, which produces more than 100 tonnes of fruit each year.
James Halliday calls Highway Wines “A survivor of another era, when literally dozens of such wineries plied their business in the Swan Valley”.
Under new ownership! Sales are through the cellar door!
