Clean eating in the Swan Valley

The Swan Valley Café has a cult following and it’s easy to understand why. Located in Western Australia’s oldest wine region situated just 25 minutes drive from Perth CBD, it’s a great place for healthy eats.

Unassuming from the outside besides the bright mural sign, step inside and it’s a different world. The little shop front counter tempts with all sorts of gluten-free goodies, in fact, the whole café is gluten-free and vegetarian with plenty of vegan and raw options. From raw berry bliss balls to rich dark chocolate cake with cashew cream and vegan carrot cake, just about every allergy can be catered for. To be on the safe side, if you phone ahead with your allergy list, the helpful staff will cater to it. Breakfast dishes include quinoa and millet porridge, Mexican breakfast beans, mushroom bruschetta and house-made granola. Lunch includes dishes such as frittata with salad, raw pizza with nut cheese and raw Thai noodles.

Wherever possible, ingredients are biodynamic, organic and sourced from local producers. Food is made from scratch without preservatives, additives or colourings, local eggs are free-range and all cheese is animal rennet free.

It’s not just a café for those with allergies, it’s a wonderful space to gather with family and friends or while away time with the adjacent nursery that provides a lush backdrop and invites a wander.

There are shelves stocked with wellness books and organic ingredients and a wall dedicated to Valley Tea, their own brand of teas for everything from slimming to insomnia blended by one of the café’s co-owners who is also a naturopath.

Walk through the shop front into the licensed indoor area that’s filled with chunky wooden tables and chairs, which is available for functions up to 50 people. Outside, there’s an open area with more seating and at the back is an undercover outdoor area that’s ideal for parents to sit and eat in peace while kids play in the large sandpit and adjoining playground. Kids are made to feel welcome and have their own menu and can entertain themselves with the library box and toys. Your fur family member needn’t miss out either – the Swan Valley Café is dog-friendly and sells healthy dog treats too.

Every second-Saturday there’s live music making it a great place for an unrushed healthy breakfast, brunch or lunch. Kick back with a gluten-free beer and enjoy a guilt-free meal that’ll nourish your body and soul.
