Midland

Midland in Western Australia (WA) was developed into a regional hub north-east of Perth due to the construction of a rail line in 1886 and the establishment of the state’s railway workshops at the turn of the 20th century.

Midland – the Swan Valley’s Commercial Centre

Rail Heritage

The Midland Railway Workshops became the region’s major provider of jobs, employing thousands of Western Australian (WA) workers during its 90-year working history.

Midland has also retained many other historical buildings, which provide an insight into the unique character of this bustling city centre. These include the Midland Town Hall, built in 1906 and considered to be one of the best examples of town halls constructed during the Federation period. Its distinctive and unusual square clock tower was added in 1923 as a memorial to soldiers of the Great War of 1914 to 1918.

Rail enthusiasts should also be sure to view the Western Australian (WA) Government Railway locomotive, located opposite the Midland Town Hall at Centrepoint Midland Shopping Centre.

Art Trail

While exploring the area, take note of the many interesting art pieces along the streets between the Midland Railway Workshops and the town centre.
