The Mondo Nougat story dates back to 1989 when Alfonso Romeo, one of 6 brothers dedicated to La Dolce Vita (The sweet Life), migrated from Italy to Australia, with his wife, Antonietta (Toni) and their three sons, Andrea, Simone and Marco. Working from home Alfonso began producing the cakes and deserts he and his brothers were famous for in Calabria. Word quickly spread of Alfonso’s devilish deserts and within three short years the husband and wife team opened Mondo Patisserie in Midland.
Situated in the historical centre of Midland in Western Australia, Mondo Patisserie began as a producer and retailer of traditional Italian style patisserie, including cakes, biscuits, gelati, petite mignon and other traditional specialties. Production of nougat coincided with the Christmas festive season as per European tradition. It was not until 1997, after finding that there was a very strong demand for traditional honey based nougat that production was included all year.
Mondo Patisserie, due to overwhelming demand, decided to shift its focus and concentrate purely on nougat. In 2000 Mondo Patisserie had outgrown the Midland store and shifted into a new factory and retail outlet in Morley, Western Australia and began trading under the new name of Mondo Nougat. Working under the motto: Tradition Innovation Excellence the success continued and in four short years Mondo Nougat was on the move again.
A family drive one Sunday afternoon through the Swan Valley, Western Australia’s oldest wine growing region, presented the Romeo family with an incredible opportunity. The cheese factory had closed down and left behind a new factory, exactly what Mondo Nougat needed to continue its success.
In April 2005 the Mondo Nougat Factory – Swan Valley opened to the public. The new factory now provided visitors with a unique insight into the production of Mondo Nougat. With all three sons now involved in the business, Alfonso was able to expand Mondo Nougat to include a casual cafè into the retail outlet, re-introducing the many home made cakes, biscotti and Gelati he was renowned for as well as his special ‘espresso’ coffee.
2010 saw the installation of a new chocolate line and no prizes for guessing what the first product of the line was... Mondini- chocolate coated nougat. The new line was soon producing honeycomb, Turkish delight, nuts and even chocolate coated pretzels.
Today Alfonso and his family continue to pride themselves in producing the world’s finest nougat using the Australia's finest ingredients to ensure that “La Dolce Vita” (the sweet life) goes on.
